I believe more than anybody that your happiness starts with YOU.
My dad is someone who also believes this more than anybody.
My dad always calls me on his way home from work or his way home from the gym. Today we talked about a few different things; our outfits for the tough mudder race we’re going to run next month, the vlog video I was working on, my work, and his work. My dad is an ROTC instructor at a high school and we were talking about his students. He was telling me he has some students who have a lot of emotional issues, some who are cutters, ect. He was talking to me about how the first question he always asks his students is, “What do you see when you look in the mirror?” He went on to explain how most of the time at first the student is looking at him like “what the fuck do you mean” and he goes on to say,
Dad: “When you look in the mirror, what do you see?”
Student: “My reflection??”
Dad: “Do you like what you see? The person looking back at you, do you like what you see? And I’m not just talking about externally. Do you like the person you are on the inside? If you weren’t you, and you met you, would you like yourself? And if not then that’s where we need to start. NOBODY is going to make you happier than you will and that’s where is all starts. Make a change within yourself. You have to like yourself first.”
And I was like HELL YES DAD PREACH IT! I had never thought of it in that sense or use an analogy like a mirror to explain it to somebody and I thought it was a phenomenal concept. I was like, “Damn dad you just nailed that one”. And I couldn’t agree more. I’ve written a post before about becoming the type of person you would want to fall in love with and I think my dad is talking about a similar concept. He said, if you were not you and you met yourself, would you be your own friend? (hopefully that’s not too confusing) But think about it, if you wouldn’t even want to be your own friend then how can you expect others to want to be your friend? If you look in the mirror and you don’t like the person you are on the inside, then how can you expect others to like the person you are on the inside? If you don’t love yourself then how can you expect others to love you?
You are in charge of your own life, your own fate, your own destiny! Not a single person on this planet is going to care about yourself as much as you, not your parents or a sibling or significant other. YOU have to take control, turn your dreams into a reality, never give up or stop believing. Everything starts within, everything starts with you.
E v e r y t h i n g starts with you.
So, do you like what you see when you look in the mirror?
